Shopping Euphoria

May 14, 2012
I finally got down to the new Marshall’s to see if I could find something I needed or wanted, and I have to say I was a little shocked.

For a bargain store in an economically challenged town, the prices are a bit steep. I am always looking for a great bargain, and most of the people I know are too. Many people in town are on a fixed income. To add to that, unemployment has been up the past few years and people are usually trying to figure out how to get the most out of their dollar.

Marshall’s had a great weekend as far as customer base goes, but I think once the novelty of the store wears off many people will be feeling regret when they realize they overspent and most likely went outside of their budget limit.

As I walked through the store, I noticed merchandise lying on the floor. It appears that Marshall’s employees don’t have much interest in keeping the store clean and presentable.

At one point, an employee cut me off and almost bumped right into me as she was on her way to talk to someone else. I found this extremely rude. It screamed to me, “I DON’T CARE ABOUT MY CUSTOMERS. I AM MORE IMPORTANT THAN OTHERS, AND I DON’T CARE WHO I HAVE TO SHOVE OUT OF MY WAY TO GET TO WHERE I WANT TO BE.” Then, she made some snide comment to the person she was addressing. I don’t know if it was another employee or a customer. I didn’t bother to look- I just kept right on going and exited the store. Did I mention I didn’t buy anything?

I give Marshall’s until the end of the year before they end up like the other optimistic businesses that have tried to make a go of it in Oroville and failed- that is if they don’t make some drastic changes. We shall see.

Of course, that is just one person’s opinion. Others may feel differently.
