For those of you in the community who have been yearning for independent and thought-provoking media, your prayers may be answered.

Slanted Magazine was the end result of an attempt to revive an already existing magazine, Static Magazine. Unfortunately, attempts to revitalize that project failed due to circumstances that left Wes and Kristy Schuck, former publishers of Static, with little to no energy or time to invest in it.

The Schucks, No Alternative Media; and Rob Lawson, Lawson Media and Publishing were originally to publish Static, but now the project has evolved after much planning to publish Slanted Magazine: Southern Minnesota Arts and Culture. Lawson said that since the vision of the magazine is to present ideas in a different way than mainstream media do, Slanted was most appropriate.

"We in the arts community often see the world from different perspectives and this magazine will explore those perspectives," said Lawson.

(Disclosure: The editor of The Mankato Gazette is also the publisher of Slanted Magazine)

Slanted is an "alternative media" publication, similar to City Pages, Rolling Stone, etc. Lawson's content covers the community in Southern Minnesota with an emphasis on art, culture, music, history, philosophy, dance, theatre, technology, people and events.

The audience for Slanted is largely 21-45-year-olds, but many readers aged 16-55 read the publication, according to Lawson, based on his observations in the communities he works in. Lawson Media is based in St. Peter, MN, on Minnesota Ave.
