Annual Dokota Memorial Ride Brought History Back

January 2, 2016
A portion of Riverfront Drive closed for about an hour on Saturday, December 26 for the annual Dakota Wokiksuye Memorial Ride that honors the 38 Dakota Native American warriors that were hanged in the largest mass execution in United States history. The 38 were executed in Mankato in December of 1862. President Abraham Lincoln pardoned several others but still allowed the hanging in Mankato.

The horseback ride began at Land of Memories Park. The ride continued onto Highway 169 and ended up traveling across Riverfront Drive to Reconciliation Park.
