Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve reports that shortly before 3:00 P.M. July 24, Marinette County Dispatch received calls that a suspect in a black Chevy Tahoe had shot and hit their vehicle on U.S. 141 just south of Wausaukee.

Sheriff Deputies rushed to the highway. The victims kept the suspect vehicle in sight and reported it pulled off eastbound in Wausaukee. Shortly after that they reported the suspect vehicle was behind them and shot their vehicle from behind on HIghway 141 just north of Wausaukee.

At this point two Sheriff’s squads spotted the suspect vehicle which fled north-bound at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly going left of center into on-coming traffic. The chase continued west on to U.S. Highway 8 and the suspect reached out the window and fired a hand gun at the pursuing Deputies.

The chase continued northbound on Shrine Road in the Town of Goodman. The officers lost the suspect vehicle off of Shrine Road. They believed the suspect went east on a two rut road. Officers then spread out in the area where he was last seen.

An armored vehicle and bearcat units from other agencies was requested and in-route. When the first armored vehicle arrived officers went in the two rut roads and located the suspect vehicle. The male suspect was located outside of the vehicle lying face down and was unresponsive. Officers then approached the suspect and he was believed deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

Suspect is believed to be Robb DeGroot, 43, of Green Bay, Wis.

No officers or citizens were injured in this very dangerous incident. This investigation is continuing by the Marintte County Sheriffs Office.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the Niagara Police, Crivitz Police, Laona Police, Dickinson County Michigan Sheriff’s Officers, Forest and Florence Deputies, Crandon Police, Oneida Sheriff, Brown County Sheriff, Wisconsin State Patrol and Wisc. D.N.R. Wardens Goodman Rescue, Beacon Ambulance, and Marinette County Coroner George Smith.
