Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is occurring in Marinette county, according to Marinette County Public Health Director/Health Officer Mary Mursau.

At first, the illness can seem like a common cold, but it can get worse, with severe coughing spells and vomiting. Infants are especially vulnerable to this illness.

To avoid getting whooping cough, the Center for Disease Control recommends vaccination. There is a booster shot for teenagers and adults called Tdap. This vaccine is free and now part of the tetanus booster.

For more information, call the Marinette office 1-888-732-7549, (715) 732-7670 or the Niagara office (715) 251-4769.
